Most veterinarians view probiotic supplements as safe and well-tolerated.

Several probiotic formulations on the market include chews, tablets, powders, yogurt with live cultures, and some commercial dog foods. Many veterinarians recommend routine probiotic supplementation at least several times per week or even daily usage.

Probiotics are live bacteria which are part of the normal microflora. In dogs, microbes, particularly bacteria, are part of the normal flora that reside on the skin, respiratory, genitourinary, and especially the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. In the canine gut, microflora are important defense mechanisms against infection and inflammation. Recent studies suggest gut microflora may influence neurodevelopment and even affect canine behavior.
