What Do You Think About Coronavirus Show Cancellations?

What do you think about the cancellation of shows that are to be held a month or more from now? Is this appropriate, or should they wait to see what happens before making such an important decision?

  • 1. Move closing date to 1 1/2 weeks prior to shows, instead of 2 1/2 weeks.
  • 2. Cancel shows prior to Closing but not more than 4 weeks in the Future.

  Anne Desbon I think it’s ridiculous and over done. This flu is not as virulent as the H1N1 flu and No shows were cancelled with the dog flu. There are so many viruses out there.

  Erin L McRobbJanice Hayes I just said the same! Make entry closing time closer to show dates. Put everything online. No printed catalogs. Armbands can rolls out- recycle those not used at a show for needed ones. There are ways!

• Debbie Lanzar KennedyI believe we should be looking at least six weeks out at a time. This should save on some entry fees as well. We need to be proactive. It is unrealistic to think that we can keep 6 feet apart in grooming areas. It is also unfair to our judges many of whom are elderly.     Christa Kenyon The juniors are very effected by all the cancellations. Many of them are losing valuable qualifying opportunities for Royal Canin and Westminster, especially the Open Seniors. I can understand canceling the next 3 weeks but hope the AKC can adjust qualifying wins to make it more fair. I think canceling May shows at this time is overkill but that’s just my opinion. We do need to think about our elderly judges.

    Polly Walsh Cancelling is the intelligent thing to do. This pandemic will get worse before it gets better. We have many, many elderly exhibitors. Judges should not be getting on airplanes. Relax, it will eventually get better. Be grateful if we are overreacting. And wash your hands!

    Marilyn Mitchell I think closing shows that are over a month away is premature. This thing may fizzle out just as fast as it started. And I understand about clubs not able to lose money, etc. but I think that a compromise of refunding half of the entrance fees would be reasonable. That would keep both exhibitors and the Clubs happy.

This would level the playing field with regard to ratings, and not have people entering shows to only have them cancelled. I have lost entry fees on at least 3 shows affected by State closures but it was for the best. Clubs will be making decisions with regard to refunds less expenses and I have no issue with what.

Listening to the experts and making rational decisions especially for those at risk are important for all in the next 6 weeks. If the Pandemic worsens in the next 2.5 to 3 weeks it could be revisited to start cancelling May shows. Did we Jump the gun on some of the May shows already cancelled…only time will tell.
• Kim MatlockWe don’t know where we are in the “timeline” of the covid-19. If we don’t follow recommendations and this things lingers , it will be a nightmare. Personally my show calendar will be empty until May at the earliest.

  Joan HarriganI think indoor shows should be cancelled through April— outdoors, maybe could be held. Truthfully, I think that indoor shows won’t be held until June at the earliest. We don’t know the extent of the virus yet because the test still isn’t widely available. My brother is an ER doc in Philly— he told me not to even think of going to a dog show, especially one held indoors.

• This is over. I know a lot of people make their living as handlers or vendors at show but there are many people out of work temporarily. We need to chill and not bitch about it. Life will go on

• Brianna BischoffI think no one really knows what to expect at this point. We have never had to deal with this – in this century at least. I believe each club is doing what they can with that they have. Many venues that are controlled by municipalities.. local or state government are closed for months ahead and clubs have no choice. Always wise to have multiple streams of income.

I’d like all shows to be cancelled until the country is virus free. Because unknowingly infected people can spread this virus, it’s just not worth taking a chance of being exposed at my age.   Carol Siflinger I think they should have completed all the shows equally through the weekend then cancelled until all clear. Cutting off Louisville while others were allowed to continue was unfair to those competing for rankings. I realize it is a state government decision but AKC could have taken the control on this to make it fair. I also feel AKC should use their resources to offer financial support to the workers in our industry who depend on the shows for their livelihood.

  I don’t blame AKC , they’re just following suit.

  Raven Klone I understand cancelling shows to avoid gatherings. That said, cancelling the Kentuckiana Cluster halfway through was a poor choice. Everyone was already there.
  I won’t be making any further entries until things blow over. Making plans and having them cancelled is frustrating at best.
