What Do You Think About Coronavirus Show Cancellations?

What Do You Think About Coronavirus Show Cancellations?

Canine Chronicle Readers: We want your opinion!

What do you think about the cancellation of shows that are to be held a month or more from now? Is this appropriate, or should they wait to see what happens before making such an important decision?

Your responses will appear on our Facebook page and on caninechronicle.com.

    • Armando Angelbello General guidelines could be:
    • 1. Move closing date to 1 1/2 weeks prior to shows, instead of 2 1/2 weeks.
    • 2. Cancel shows prior to Closing but not more than 4 weeks in the Future.

Anne Desbon I think it’s ridiculous and over done. This flu is not as virulent as the H1N1 flu and No shows were cancelled with the dog flu. There are so many viruses out there.

    Janice Hayes

Janice Hayes I would like to think the panic could slow down a bit. I think 3 weeks of everything cancelled should gives us a better idea of what is happening worldwide. But clubs cancelling in May seems a little extreme as we really have no idea what is next. Mayb…See More

Erin L McRobbJanice Hayes I just said the same! Make entry closing time closer to show dates. Put everything online. No printed catalogs. Armbands can rolls out- recycle those not used at a show for needed ones. There are ways!

  • Debbie Lanzar KennedyI believe we should be looking at least six weeks out at a time. This should save on some entry fees as well. We need to be proactive. It is unrealistic to think that we can keep 6 feet apart in grooming areas. It is also unfair to our judges many of whom are elderly. We may potentially expose them or place them in harms way.

    Leslie Simis
Leslie Simis I think the AKC needs to put a stop to shows until 5-1-20 so it remains a fair playing field . We cannot allow there to be some shows here and some shows there…it has to be FAIR to us all . If they mandate a nationwide shutdown of shows , then everyo…See More
Lynda Birmantas Beam Leslie Simis according to the last communication I saw from AKC it’s up to the clubs
    • Christa Kenyon
Christa Kenyon The juniors are very effected by all the cancellations. Many of them are losing valuable qualifying opportunities for Royal Canin and Westminster, especially the Open Seniors. I can understand canceling the next 3 weeks but hope the AKC can adjust qualifying wins to make it more fair. I think canceling May shows at this time is overkill but that’s just my opinion. We do need to think about our elderly judges.
    • Debbie Meador
Debbie Meador We’re asked to stay home and sit on the couch with our dogs. My parents generation lived through the depression, then defeated the Nazis and Japanese. They didn’t panic buy or hoard because they lived off food ration stamps. If you lost a few hundred…See More

    • Polly Walsh
Polly Walsh Cancelling is the intelligent thing to do. This pandemic will get worse before it gets better. We have many, many elderly exhibitors. Judges should not be getting on airplanes. Relax, it will eventually get better. Be grateful if we are overreacting. And wash your hands!
Marilyn Mitchell I think closing shows that are over a month away is premature. This thing may fizzle out just as fast as it started. And I understand about clubs not able to lose money, etc. but I think that a compromise of refunding half of the entrance fees would be reasonable. That would keep both exhibitors and the Clubs happy.
  • Kelsey JessephI understand canceling shows that are in the next few weeks but canceling shows that are in a month is over kill wait and see what happens.

Jennifer SandersNot my place to judge. I don’t know when contracts have to be in place. I would like to show my dogs but I would also not like to lose anyone in our dog show community, because our club membership and judging community are probably at higher risk of ge…See More
  • Lynda Lee PetersonIt’s sad missing shows and losing entry money for maybe a month or two, but I’m glad we are doing our part to “flatten the curve “ and not infect others or ourselves. I would hate to be responsible for passing this virus on to someone else who may possibly die.
  • Michele Shute Major overreaction to a virus that 99% will have no issues with. Completely insane

USEF stepped in on the horse showing to level the playing field.. AKC should take note.×
Coronavirus Impact on USEF Licensed CompetitionsEffective Monday, March 16, 2020, all USEF owned events, selection trials, training camps, clinics, and activities will be suspended for the next 30 days.

USEF strongly recommends that competition organizers suspend all USEF licensed competitions across the country for the next 30 days and that equestrians do not compete for the next 30 days. For those competitions that do run, there will be no accumulation of points, scores, money won, qualifications, or rankings toward any USEF awards programs, USEF owned event, or selection to a US team during this 30-day time period. This includes USEF National Championships.

Resources from the CDC, WHO, USOPC, and the FEI are available on usef.org/media/coronavirus-resources. Links found on this webpage provide you with direct access to valuable information on each organization’s website.

  • Sheila T. AllenI think AKC should step up and just cancel all shows everywhere until May 1st. This would level the playing field with regard to ratings, and not have people entering shows to only have them cancelled. I have lost entry fees on at least 3 shows affected by State closures but it was for the best. Clubs will be making decisions with regard to refunds less expenses and I have no issue with what.
  • Jan MollerSometimes it’s best to allay fears and cancel. I agree it would be good to know as far in advance as is possible so to know how much grooming has to be done
  • Patricia GaryI think it’s a prudent response, considering the median age of the exhibitors.
  • Debra Pilato JedlickaI personally want to know as far in advance as possible so I can look at other possibilities and not waste time and preparations for a show I won’t be attending.

Marie Debbie ZinkCancelling shows thru April is realistic and necessary. Listening to the experts and making rational decisions especially for those at risk are important for all in the next 6 weeks. If the Pandemic worsens in the next 2.5 to 3 weeks it could be revisited to start cancelling May shows. Did we Jump the gun on some of the May shows already cancelled…only time will tell.
  • Kim MatlockWe don’t know where we are in the “timeline” of the covid-19. If we don’t follow recommendations and this things lingers , it will be a nightmare. Personally my show calendar will be empty until May at the earliest.
  • Bernee BrawnIMO, Canceling events the end of May is too much. At that point events are outdoors, and they should wait to make those decisions
  • Judy Gatesappropriate with the area being quarantined. It happens.
  • Lynn Straw Olds NO!
Joan HarriganI think indoor shows should be cancelled through April— outdoors, maybe could be held. Truthfully, I think that indoor shows won’t be held until June at the earliest. We don’t know the extent of the virus yet because the test still isn’t widely available. My brother is an ER doc in Philly— he told me not to even think of going to a dog show, especially one held indoors.
  • Jenny Listug If the club closes the show I think it is best for everyone.
  • Please keep my entry fee.
  • I want to support the club as best I can and hope they will return when all is well!…See More

  • Teri Beverly Many of the clubs do not have a choice it’s the state or possibly the facility that has closed its doors till
  • This is over. I know a lot of people make their living as handlers or vendors at show but there are many people out of work temporarily. We need to chill and not bitch about it. Life will go on

  • Joanne BeltranI’m just outside Augusta GA. the Masters has been delayed til the fall. This area is heavily dependent on Masters week for business. But they have decided to delay, and hope for the best
  • Kali Teufel Having already had three days worth of entry fees eaten by a last minute cancellation, I have zero plans to enter ANY shows until we are well clear of this crisis.
  • I am entered in the AKC RNC in June and sincerely hope they don’t have to cancel it, too.
  • Joanne Beltran Idk. We are in a pretty good area ..just closed the schools, universities on extended break. Stores seem to have everything but hand sanitizer, paper towels and antibacterial soap. TP is gone before its barely off the truck.

  • Brianna BischoffI think no one really knows what to expect at this point. We have never had to deal with this – in this century at least. I believe each club is doing what they can with that they have. Many venues that are controlled by municipalities.. local or state government are closed for months ahead and clubs have no choice. Always wise to have multiple streams of income.

Patti PriceIt depends on the event centers they are being held at I think if they have closed down until certain dates it’s out of the clubs hands.

  • Kathleen RoosensDepends…if you like to recover entry money in case of cancellation…it should be cancelled way in advance…. If cancelled last minute…organisation makes ‘more’ costs…
  • Tonia PerryResponsible. Necessary. Do I like it? Of course not. We just have to be patient and show when they can get going again.

  • Jillian O’ConnellFor those that worry about the virus they should stay home at their judgement. But let others enjoy the shows.
  • Barry BrabantPlease cancel everything. Don’t be part of the problem. Your NOT exceptions.

  • Ardith DahlstromMy eyes and ears were wide open when this virus jumped out of China. I cancelled all further entries that had not closed yet. I’d like all shows to be cancelled until the country is virus free. Because unknowingly infected people can spread this virus, it’s just not worth taking a chance of being exposed at my age. Who in their right mind would want to find out that they had infected a lot of people??
  • Kathy McGrane HelmingWell it’s better to cancel before entries close if possible..
  • Michele ShuteMajor overreaction to a virus that 99% will have no issues with. Completely insane

  • Nathan FrisbyDon’t over react but use safe measures.
  • Donna Mikiciuk Colt Agree with Marie Debbie Zink
  • Debby Krieg CDC just announced national guidelines recommending limiting gatherings of 50 people or more for the next 8 weeks.
  • AKC should use this information to make a national recommendation for this time period.
  • Jane Stansbury
Jane Stansbury Time for a break so this can be contained. Sometimes it is good to take a break and consider the good of all.
  • Marichin C. Uriarte
Marichin C. Uriarte Show that where cancel in advance should refund part of the money, not all, the superintendent of the show has not put the show so no expense but the club has to pay for the venue , the judges had not make the trip, no expense, some money not all need…See More

Karen R. Beard my dog comes first, I want to take care of him, if I am sick that may not happen…better safe than sorry, and I’ve been showing 48 yrs.
  • Carol Siflinger
Carol Siflinger I think they should have completed all the shows equally through the weekend then cancelled until all clear. Cutting off Louisville while others were allowed to continue was unfair to those competing for rankings. I realize it is a state government decision but AKC could have taken the control on this to make it fair. I also feel AKC should use their resources to offer financial support to the workers in our industry who depend on the shows for their livelihood.
Anne Desbon I think it’s ridiculous and over done. This flu is not as virulent as the H1N1 flu and No shows were cancelled with the dog flu. There are so many viruses out there.
    I don’t blame AKC , they’re just following suit.
Raven Klone I understand cancelling shows to avoid gatherings. That said, cancelling the Kentuckiana Cluster halfway through was a poor choice. Everyone was already there.
I won’t be making any further entries until things blow over. Making plans and having them cancelled is frustrating at best.

7 Comments for “What Do You Think About Coronavirus Show Cancellations?”

  1. I think the shows should continue until a major outbreak occurs. Hopefully fewer spectators will help the situation.

  2. Casandra de la Rosa

The purpose of social distancing is reduce exposure and avoid a major outbreak that will overload hospitals and medical resources to the point that some people will not have access to treatment. That means not just virus sufferers, but stroke- and heart-attack victims or other people needing urgent care might not get it if we don’t keep the caseload from getting to the crisis level. As members of the close-knit dog community, our priority should be the health and well-being of all of us, in particular, the most vulnerable. The graying of our sport means that a large percentage of participants are in the high-risk group (over age 70). Cancelling shows is inconvenient, disappointing and for clubs, financially challenging. Are we going to be the group that does not do our share to minimize the spread of this virus? There will always be more shows – if we are here to enjoy them.

  3. I think it is a bad idea because many of the people that participate in dog shows are professional handlers trying to make a living. The handlers will go broke if we keep canceling things that they can make a living out of.

  4. I understand both sides. I feel the very least AKC should do is possibly lower the point schedule requirements for all breeds, all areas for Champion and grand champion points. I constantly hear people complain they didn’t show because the major requirement is too high for their area. Maybe this will encourage people to enter and show more dogs when this blows over. Kennel clubs, handlers and exhibitors can all benefit from more entries.

  5. It would be a lot easier of AKC would cancel all events until May 1st. Then we could stop worrying over which events will be cancelled, what we should/could enter, and what will happen to our entry fees. It would be less stressful for clubs and superintendents. They could focus on May and further out. Then, if need be, AKC could extend the cancellation,

  6. It would be nice if fees already paid would be reimbursed. Most of the big venues should have cancellation insurance to pay back clubs.
