Let’s start at the beginning, Friday, April 5th, 2024, 10:23 am EDT. Is this bound to be one of those days and times when people ask, “Where were you when the Earthquake rumbled through the Northeast?” An earthquake of 4.8 magnitude is not only rare, it is historical. There has never been an earthquake of this size felt in such a large area, rattling the earth, and shocking the people who experienced it. From the epicenter of Lebanon, New Jersey–a semi-rural area located in the western central part of the state–to the rest of the United States, the earthquake caused quite a “stir” but, fortunately, no great damage.
Where were you at the time the earthquake hit? We all have a story. Mine goes as follows. April 5th is my husband’s birthday. I woke up well before the sun that morning to fly off to a judging assignment in Massachusetts. I kissed him goodbye, wished him a happy birthday, and drove to the airport. When I landed shortly before 10 AM, I asked the driver if she would stop at a market where I could get some food to take back with me to the hotel. It took a bit longer than I expected. As I was returning to the car, my phone started to ring and texts were coming in one after another. I wondered why. I answered the phone first. Our landlord, who owns the home we are renting on their horse farm, could hardly speak. “I think we just had an earthquake, did you hear and feel it?” “No! Are you sure?” I asked with trepidation. Then I realized she did not know I wasn’t home and had no idea of what was happening.
She was definitely upset. “I heard the sound of a bowling ball being slammed on the alley and then the whole house shook. It was really loud and the art on the walls starting moving side to side,” she related. I listened in disbelief. An earthquake in the wilds of western New Jersey made my head spin. I let the texts pile up while I Googled for more information. When I saw the results, my heart literally started to pound. Lebanon, New Jersey is adjacent to the location where we are building our nearly completed home. “Was there damage? Are people hurt?” I admitted to myself that I was worried.
