Young people have a great deal on their plates. They need to balance everything from spending time in the classroom, and getting all of their homework finished and submitted on time, to finding time to practice with their ring partner, and traveling to shows and competing in the juniors’ ring. Being successful in school and in the sport of Junior Showmanship requires discipline, good time management skills, and much more.
The life of a young person whose chosen sport is Junior Showmanship is not for those weak of heart. How does a young person find a balance between their school, work, and participation in the sport? Mind you, we have not even considered the time needed to spend with family and friends, or even a part-time job. However, striking this balance is crucial–not only for short-term success, but for long-term growth as well.
Balancing one’s academics and participation in Junior Showmanship requires strong organizational skills, effective time management, and a solid parental support system. Prioritizing tasks, utilizing downtime, and effective communication also serve to help. Young athletes can achieve this by creating a schedule that includes time to study, practicing with their dog, going to shows, and even rest breaks, while also seeking support from parents, teachers, and friends.
Understanding why balancing academics and their participation in Junior Showmanship is important to a young competitor because it lays the foundation for success in both areas. So, how can a young person ensure that they manage to meet all of their many commitments while in middle or high school? Junior handlers can successfully balance academics and participation in the sport of Junior Showmanship by developing effective work habit strategies, and building a strong support system.
