I admit—it’s harder than I thought it would ever be. Physically, moving into your new home is exhausting. First, the boxes need to be placed in the correct room. If they are in the wrong place, they need to be moved again. Hopefully, each box has a label with its contents and final location. Even so, the odds are likely that some things will never fit in the space as expected. Suddenly, boxes pile up in the garage or a large room until a place is found for them. From my recent experience—honestly—boxes still remain in the garage.

Hours and hours are required to open countless boxes, unpack the contents, break down the boxes, and then take them to the recycling center. It takes days and days to complete that job. In the wilds of western New Jersey, there are specific days and times when the county’s facilities accommodate the need to dispose of them. You can bring loads and loads at no cost, provided they are correctly bundled. Workers are there to check your eligibility to use the service and supervise the process. We are just about finished making those trips… thank goodness.

Days slip by deciding “what goes where” before anything can get accomplished. The brakes need to be put on to make time to clear and clean the space. Dirt comes into the house from the movers emptying their trucks. Walking over the stone driveway to come through the front entrance and garage adds even more dust and grime. The movers did put down brown paper, furniture rugs, and mats. When they were finally removed, the vacuums came out to get the dirt up as quickly as possible. The air-conditioning blasting through the house made the situation worse. Putting linens on the bed was the final task of that day. It was well past midnight before we turned off the lights. Who can forget that?
