HUMBLE BEGINNINGS LEAD TO AN ICONIC CAREER IN DOGS.

Becoming a dog expert demands a very tricky skillset, and that begins way before practical knowledge even enters the equation. Simply embarking on a trip down this road requires some unique traits. Prodigious mental and physical energy are an obvious prerequisite. Likewise, it’s gotta be focused. However, that stuff alone will never get this show on the road, and that’s why Dog Expert will never be the credentialist sort of label that can be sold off the shelf. Because there’s one more key component. It’s both essential and generally incompatible with all the ambition, creativity, and drive that’s prepackaged into those Type A personalities. I’m talking about the rare ability to subordinate all those impulses and talents. In other words, keeping your ego out of the equation and charting a steady course toward the true goal of this whole business- breeding better dogs.

No amount of knowledge or experience can make a true dog expert without that ephemeral quality. Maybe it helps to start with a blank slate; no fantasies, schemes, or preconceptions, nothing but rock solid fascination with purebred dogs.

“Mom came from Chicago, from a family with no animals” recalls Daryl Martin. At this point, Daryl’s accomplishments as a breeder and handler are virtually inseparable from the sport, but this story isn’t about track records (or Daryl), it’s about something that’s almost become an anomaly these days. Starting from scratch and getting to the top. It’s almost impossible to recall a time when this game was dominated by clueless novices high on enthusiasm and low on expertise (probably not since the ‘40s). Coincidentally, some of the greatest names in our sport came out of that era. It truly was the golden age of amateurs.
