Interms of historical accuracy, John Marvin was on point. He presented topics in almost forensic detail–the good and the not so good. That is the historian’s job, but when it comes to purebred history, that job can be a challenge. Too often those maddening gaps in the record succumb to creative interpretation. John Marvin never resorted to shortcuts, and his legacy continues to inform us today. But here’s the thing about Mr. Marvin…scratch the surface and it’s obvious that his dispassionate presentation was not the whole story. Because he truly loved Terriers and there was no disguising that fact. Marvin and his wife bred Wires, and later Westies, under the Cranbourne prefix for decades. He judged Terriers starting in 1947, and later took on the torture of serving as Montgomery show chairman from 1971-77. Of course, he also wrote prolifically, and it’s in his writing that his true passion for these breeds is revealed. He was a romantic at heart. His overview of the Welsh Terrier in his 1964 Book of All Terriers is a good example.
