The Facebook post read: “So, recently I’ve seen posts by two people proudly calling their dogs Best In Show winners. One in my breed and one in another. The accepted meaning in the United States is that you have won an AKC Best In Show. Or if you are Canadian, a Canadian Best In Show. It is deceptive and disingenuous to call your UKC or IABCA win a Best In Show without designating it as such. It is not at all the same level of competition.”
When it comes to sports, all of us have heard someone talking about winning. It always comes up and usually leads to someone who says, yes… winning is everything. Well, it may be central to all sports and competitive activities, but is it everything or is there something more? No one says it better than Lee Corso, a football sports announcer who became famous for his phrase “Not so fast my friend.” He would often use this phrase during his regular Saturday morning TV shows. With a panel of his peers, Corso would discuss and analyze the performance of different teams and players. The winners and the losers. This usually involved everyone, and it included their opinion and reasons for a team’s win or loss, and how a players’ performance made a difference. Corso’s quick observation and unique understanding of the sport made him famous when he would counter an opinion or conclusion about a team or player with, “Not so fast my friend.” Then he would follow with his perspective and analysis. His phrase during the Saturday morning weekly shows attracted a large and diverse audience who soon developed a taste for Corso’s observations and analysis. Since Corso was rarely wrong, his ideas about winning being everything also attracted national attention because he looked at things as having more than two sides.
