Stand ringside at a conformation show and you’ll often hear criticism of the judging. That’s to be expected. Everyone involved–exhibitors, owners, handlers, and judge–is human. All have their own opinions of what the breed in question should be, and all may disagree a little or a lot with what the judge is doing.

Some observers may be fairly new to conformation and may not even have bred a litter yet. Some may have been in it for five or 10 years, have produced some litters and some Champions, and they probably have tried to fix at least one fault in the whelping box with varying degrees of success. Some may have been born into a family where conformation and bloodline development were part of everyday life and have had experience with breeding programs nearly all their lives. All these groups of people bring their own experiences, successes, and struggles to the conversation going on outside the ring. Some will watch the judging and feel certain the judge isn’t getting it right.
