“A person’s best friend is their dog” has long been accepted as a truism–and for good reason. Because, for an extremely high percentage of dog owners, it really is true. This remarkable bond between humans and dogs is no less true than that the sun will rise in the east every morning. Like an eastern sunrise, the bond between humans and dogs is always there whether it’s visible or not.
Dogs have a way of making the darkest days get a bit brighter. Unlike other pets, they sense when we are sad, happy or need an understanding, if silent, friend. They are also invaluable in many different roles as therapy animals, search and rescue dogs, guide dogs and service dogs. Hunters, from the time dogs first appeared, have relied on their canine companions to find and fetch game. Military establishments have recognized the value of dogs in warfare since at least 600 B.C. and dogs have been used in law enforcement since the middle ages. For centuries, dogs have been hauling carts or sleds or carrying packs for us. They have also been used to keep vermin down to manageable levels. While doing all these different tasks, they have also stood with us as devoted companions providing security–the tales of dogs giving their lives to protect their human pals are legion–and companionship. So, the worth of dogs is unquestionable. But what is it that makes them also irresistible.
That’s not easy to define although numerous scientists have tried. Whatever this mysterious something is, dogs seem to have it from birth. When a puppy cocks its head to one side and gazes at a person with those soft puppy eyes, anyone who would refuse to pick up the pup for at least a little cuddle has to have a heart made of granite. And, who among us can really resist a side-to-side, rapidly wagging tail, that universal sign of joy and excitement that draws our attention to them immediately.
