It’s hard to believe it’s been 25 years since 9/11. Since that tragedy, NYC has dedicated enormous resources to counter-terrorism measures–detecting and preventing many subsequent attacks. At the same time, NYC has not overlooked investment in disaster response. September 11 provided a shocking reality check regarding NYC’s Emergency Management shortfalls.
Today, the city’s K9 disaster response team, New York Task Force One (NY-TF1), is internationally recognized as one of the best. Its members come from FDNY Special Operations and the NYPD Emergency Service Unit. It’s one of 28 National Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) Response teams. Over the years, NY-TF1 deployed to emergencies both inside and outside the US, including hurricanes Ida, Ian, and Helene, the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the 2023 Vermont floods, the Surfside building collapse in Florida, and those devastating 2024 Hawaii wildfires. They save lives.
Recently, to mark National Dog Day on August 26th, NY-TF1 staged a public demonstration. K9 demos are invariably popular. Regardless of how often they see it, observers are amazed to see canine skills in action. This event showcased NY-TF1’s newest class of graduates–an accomplishment that deserves recognition.
