As children, we start learning about time in kindergarten. An hour consists of 60 minutes, a day of 24 hours and a year has 365 days. We pretty much have the telling of time mastered sometime during the second-grade year and we begin to follow time with clocks and measure it with calendars.
Rarely do we, I believe, think about the fundamental nature of time, and that is, that time just keeps passing. We cannot speed it up, nor can we slow it down, and, unfortunately, we cannot save it. I am sixty-three and only in recent years have I stopped using the phrase “in my spare time,” because like “extra money,” I have never had any. One of the most peculiar qualities of time is the fact that we humans often have difficulty learning some of the really important concepts of time, like the value of time and using our time wisely.
The Breeder’s Ally
There is one single commodity that all highly successful breeders use and use wisely. Some would suggest it is available in a seemingly unlimited quantity and is free of charge. However, very few novices utilize it to their advantage. What could this asset be? It is time.
In my nearly thirty-five years showing dogs, experience has shown me that a large percentage of the people new to the sport want success now and maybe that is simply a product of the time in which we live. Having decided on a breed, they feel frustrated if they are unable to find the right dog (or any dog) within a week, or two at the most. Also, when they decide to breed (and they almost always do), they must select a stud dog to use now (usually after their little “pride and joy” has come into season). Sadly, these novices, if they do not win immediately, change the brand of dog food they use, the handlers they use, or even dogs. What is the rush? Time, is the breeder’s ally.
