Joni Mitchell wrote these extremely famous lines in her song Big Yellow Taxi, “Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone…”
And these lines would often come back to haunt me whenever I was very far from home, traveling around the world.
When people, especially Americans, discovered that I was from England they would often enthuse about the ‘patchwork quilt’ of the iconic English countryside, the beautiful villages, its characterful pubs (recollections of English pubs were, strangely, always extremely popular with my American friends!) and, of course, its rich history.
These were all things I had been fully immersed in and taken completely for granted until I suddenly found myself thousands of miles away from them.
It is indeed a truism that “familiarity breeds contempt”.
