When, as little more than a toddler, my sister first saw a Bedlington Terrier, she pointed excitedly and exclaimed ‘lamb dog!’, much to my mother’s (and the terrier’s owner’s) amusement.

And, it’s easy to understand the comparison; there is indeed something very lamb-like about their look and presentation but, as the title of this piece warns, do not be deceived by those meek and mild looks!

I’ve often said to truly understand any breed you have to understand the purpose it was bred for as well as the landscape and the people that molded it.

So, let’s take a deep dive into the fascinating history of the Bedlington Terrier…

As far as terrier ancestry goes, the Bedlington can claim a highly respectable antiquity. Like many, its pedigree is lost in those oft-quoted “mists of time” but those mists date far back farther than most.

However, there are several versions of the “true and original” history of this unique breed.
