Not too long after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, a young woman named Vivian Edwards returned to California from a respite in St. Louis. While there, she had purchased a young Doberman Pinscher bitch, Casa del Canto’s Commanche, a double granddaughter of Sieger Ch. Muck v. Brunia. Vivian was new to the breed but she had been well-mentored and had ideas of perfection. Her search for the right stud dog took her to Mrs. Randle, and when Commanche was ready, she was bred to a grandson of Muck: the fiery Ch. Ferry v. Rauhfelsen (see ‘The Great Ones,’ The Canine Chronicle, pg. 162, June 2022). From this breeding came Juno of Moorpark, CD, and with this one bitch, a dynasty was founded.

In 1944 Vivian and her husband, Brint, registered Rancho Dobe as their kennel prefix and began breeding in earnest. Focusing her breeding program on some of the great dogs of the past, Mrs. Edwards linebred on Ferry’s dam, Ch. Jessy v. d. Sonnehoehe, sculpting her ideals of perfection. Soon the Rancho Dobe dogs were becoming noted for their elegance, breed type and winning ways. Here were proud, graceful dogs that anyone would be happy to take into the ring, and soon the dog press was writing about their wins.

In her book, The World of the Doberman Pinscher, Anna Katherine Nicholas wrote, ‘Some of the unforgettable Rancho Dobe dogs have included the Best in Show winner Ch. Rancho Dobe’s Riff and his littermates Goth and Kashmir.’ When Kashmir was bred to the immortal classic sire, Ch. Alcor v. Millsdod, the great litter brothers, Ch’s Rancho Dobe’s Presto and Primo were born. Presto went on to become a Best in Show winning Doberman and sired the now famous ‘gambling litter,’ which included the great bitch, Ch. Rancho Dobe’s Roulette, who was the very first Doberman bitch to win more than three Best in Shows. In her lifetime, Roulette took home nine Bests and produced classic sires and producers which are behind many of our most respected names in Dobermans today.

The gambling litter was out of the Ferry granddaughter, Ch. Maedel v. Randahof, and the Edwards were curious to see what she would produce when she was next bred to Presto’s litter brother, Ch. Rancho Dobe’s Primo.
