The Great Dane War

By Lee Connor

As regular readers may well know, last year, after Marc received an exciting job offer, we moved away from the seaside to be closer to London.

I have to admit, initially I wasn’t too enthused about the move and finding a house to rent that would accept four dogs proved to be unbelievably difficult.

Eventually, we stumbled upon a rambling bungalow with a large garden. It was extremely dated (and the broadband was shocking!) but the owners were open to us having our dogs, so (because they always come first) we snapped it up.

Our new home was in the county of Surrey and just a stone’s throw from miles of open heathland, wooded hills and picturesque villages–sometimes it’s quite hard to believe that we are merely 40 miles from the capital.

Surrey is also steeped in history, and not just the usual run-of-the-mill stories of visiting kings and queens, battles and gruesome murders; no, more importantly to us pedigree dog lovers is the fact that the county was once the home to numerous famous breeders (names that still loom large in doggy history around the world) and some very significant, pioneering kennels in a number of breeds.

Two of these kennel names, Ouborough and Send, will be instantly recognizable to anyone with even a fleeting interest in Great Danes and (in the case of Ouborough) Irish Wolfhounds.
