When the AKC announced the creation of NOHS regional events last year, the news was met with some skepticism and plenty of questions. Many of these have been answered with the advent of the first Regional NOHS event, held with the Lakeland Winterhaven Kennel Club’s Strawberry Classic in Florida, just days after Westminster.
Would any show want to host one?
The Regionals have requirements, foremost of which is they must not be held with an all-breed show. That means an extra day of renting a site with just a small percentage of the regular show income. It turns out that shows competed for the chance to host these events. The first one to be approved and held was with the Lakeland Winter Haven Strawberry Cluster in Lakeland, Florida. They report that they had their application almost immediately upon hearing about the event. And yes, clubs had to apply, making it a contest to see what each club could offer to make it a truly special event.
Would owner-handlers pay an entry fee to enter one?
Entering NOHS at a regular show is easy: check the box. No extra fee is paid. But for the Regionals, a regular entry fee is required. This makes sense as the club needs to recoup some of its entry, not only for the venue but judges, ribbons, trophies, AKC fees and the superintendent. But, in fact, more than 400 owner-handlers paid regular entry fees to enter.
Would judges be willing to come just to judge NOHS?
