Regular readers of my jottings will be well aware that, at some time or another, I have wanted to own almost every breed of dog known to man!

I have had some delightfully dreamy dalliances with just the mere thought of owning a Chow, Borzoi, Afghan Hound, Bullmastiff, Bulldog, Griffon, Standard Poodle and the subject of today’s piece, the Chinese Crested.

Now, whilst my love affairs with the breeds mentioned above have been somewhat fleeting, my interest in this gorgeous toy has endured, despite me never actually owning one.

This adoration reaches back to my childhood when I received a copy of the Observer Book of Dogs and, whilst thumbing through its pages, I was completely captivated by one particular photograph.

I can see it now.

It was of a glamorous blue Chinese Crested dog with a huge, white, flowing mane.

I announced to my father that I really wanted one.

He took a look–was completely horrified and immediately bought a Rottweiler puppy! But that didn’t thwart my passion for this eye-catching little breed.
