Another day of unremitting rain continues to fall on the wilds of Western New Jersey. For more than a week, we have been under continuous flash flood alerts. I am looking out the large windows in front of me, as I sit at the kitchen island, and all I can see is the water dripping from the canvas cover over the dogs’ large pen. Beyond that the foothills of the Appalachians are obscured by the mist and rolling fog. The windmill which pumps water on this farm property is enjoying a rest from the many battles it has fought when the strong winds have blown through relentlessly. It is a relic of the 1940s, but still in good working condition today.
The entire gestalt of this working farm is peaceful. Sitting high among the surrounding hills, it provides a quiet place for the people and animals who share the acres. On most days, the horses are out in one of the pastures enjoying the sun and abundant grass on which they graze. The fields of hay are growing tall as they wait to be harvested before summer ends. The fenced garden with its stunning variety of flowers requires extra care as the soil becomes muddy from the daily deluges. The rose bushes need intensive care, now, to come back in flower before fall.
If someone was to ask me, “Do you live in a bubble?” I would have to say, “Only when I am here at home. The rest of the time, I think I am living in a world I scarcely recognize.” Maybe you feel that way, too.
