Until this summer, who ever heard of a “heat dome”? This summer, all over the United States, we have seen them come and go–only to come again. Because they are an unwelcomed visitor causing havoc week after week, I decided to learn more about these heat domes. Being a complete rube on the subject, I made a visit to my good friend Google to see what I need to know about the phenomenon. Google sent me to a rather respected source, National Geographic. Their headline, “Extreme humidity and triple-digit temperatures are expected to affect millions of people across the United States,” sounded ominous. Let’s discover why.
The New York Times offered a brief, but understandable, description: “A heat dome is a high pressure system way up in the atmosphere that helps create and encase heat, kind of like a lid on a pot which holds in steam.” As large as one thousand miles from end to end, the heat dome remains in one place, building up heat which gets trapped under the dome. The more humidity under the dome, the hotter the temperature becomes. Additionally, strong thunderstorms with dangerous lightning strikes occur frequently. The damage caused includes loss of power from trees falling on electrical lines, homes, cars, and other buildings. Flooding from excessive rain causes other problems. The heat can also destroy crops. Nowhere is spared.
