I graduated from college with a degree in elementary education. A required class for that tract was a comprehensive immersion into children’s literature. With another major in English literature, it was an excellent pairing for me. Both of these majors have proven to be worthy assets in my life. From helping me guide our son through school to coaching new exhibitors in the ring–and to be sitting here writing for you, my faithful readers–I am grateful for that education.
Doing two full majors while racing through my undergraduate courses in less than three years taught me to keep up a rapid pace. “Get everything done on time” was my motto. “Push through,” I would tell myself. When I went to the dean at my university to ask to take more credits, she asked me why. I shared that my husband was finishing his medical residency the following year. We might need to move. For both my fall and spring semesters, I added night classes to my schedule. They were taught at a nearby college she suggested. I managed to push through with that goal in mind.

If you have, you know about Alexander, a young boy who, in the style of this realistic fictional tale, is having one awful day. It is very relatable. Who hasn’t had one of those days? The author conveys that though we suffer, we eventually realize it wasn’t as bad as we thought. Pushing through difficulties helps us appreciate the good things we receive in our lives.

For whatever reason, my iPad could not connect to the wi-fi. Unhappy, I put the iPad away, zipped up my backpack, and put it under the seat. Then, I used my phone to delete old emails and text a fellow judge I was meeting in Chicago. Of course, the gate where I was landing was a million miles from the next one. The connection was very tight. We met and boarded. There was no time for small talk.
