356 – The Annual, 2025-26

By Elaine Lessig

I jumped into my car to meet up with my friend, Wendy. We regularly put on some miles during the week. Like most cars, when I turn on my engine, the heat comes on, the side mirrors extend, the seat heaters light up, and the steering wheel drops into place. My car had been in for an “A” service the day before. Obviously, the technician needed to reset a few things. My husband and I swapped cars that day. He drives right by the dealership on his way to work. Naturally, I was left to manually reset all the bells and whistles in the car before leaving the driveway to begin my journey.

I did not want to be late meeting Wendy. It was probably the coldest day since last year. We were planning on doing one of our favorite walks along Rockaway Creek through the wilds of western New Jersey. The trail along the creek follows rushing water which ebbs and flows over humongous rocks. Sometimes it sounds so loud that we can’t hear each other talk. The wildlife we encounter along the 6 miles is both domesticated and wild. Farm animals abound on the acres near the creek. One particular goose always screams when we walk by his pond. Often, we see heron in the creek. Deer, squirrels, and fox are just a few of the animals in the woods. This area is renowned for its large horse farms, too. To sum it up, it’s a wonder.

To be on time at our meeting spot, the only accessory in the car I actually turned on was the radio. Up popped a station I did not recognize. It was Christian-based. The man speaking proclaimed that, “Today is the first day of our Christmas programming which begins now continuing to the end of the year. We start with a familiar hymn, “Abide with Me,” also known as “Eventide”. Immediately, a choir began to sing.
