Week after week since Thanksgiving, our country has been assaulted with storms, upon storms. Snow fell in places which rarely ever see it. In other locations, the volume of the white stuff piled up in record amounts. High winds, frigid temperatures, and sleet left thousands without electricity. Frozen pipes, dead car batteries, and empty grocery shelves became a frequent problem. As the temperatures dropped to dangerous levels, people and their pets found creative ways to keep safe. Garages became indoor X-pens, furniture rugs covered dog cages in rooms with little or no heat, and all those warm dog coats you haven’t used in years were a blessing.
Things went from bad to worse as 2025 ended, and 2026 blew in with a series of dangerous storms from coast to coast. What began on the West Coast became a constant menace as the storms traveled east. Time after time, roads were closed due to accidents, declared states of emergencies, and only open for the plows. Airlines had to stop operations because of icing, deicing time, and schedules which were impossible to follow. Mother Nature must have been very busy. Every time a new weather event came through, it seemed to be bigger than the one before. She, however, simply kept the tempo going.
We live in New Jersey, nowhere near New York City. Just 17 miles from the Delaware River, it’s a semi-rural area surrounded by reservoirs, forests, and the beginning of the Appalachian Mountain Chain. Nearby are large and small horse farms, equestrian facilities, well-known dog breeders, and kennels. For all these reasons, and more, we refer to this beautiful area of the state as the wilds of Western New Jersey. Bear, fisher, bobcats, fox, and coyote roam everywhere. Hawks and other birds of prey are commonplace here. Somehow, they manage to live with smaller birds here in abundance. Of course, the deer population lives among us, too.
