Every year just as November ends, my friend Peter, who lives in the Midlands of England, begins his yearly quest for the perfect, fresh Christmas tree. He is very precise about what he wants. The tree must be tall enough to nearly touch the deep, old wooden beams on the ceiling of the sitting room in their charming country home. The branches must be long and heavy enough to hold the myriad of lights and precious ornaments which will adorn it. The tree may be one he chops down on the site while he is there, or one that has already been freshly cut. Either way, it is imperative that not only must the tree be fragrant; it also must be just the perfect color green.

While I live on this side of the big pond which separates us, I have the pleasure of seeing every moment of the search for the tree, and for the decoration of it from the start to its magnificent finish. Thanks to a GoPro camera and some editing, I can watch how the “perfect” tree is selected, cut down, shot through a powerful machine which places the tree in a net cage, and then gets quickly tied to the car’s roof for the ride home.

Once at home, the tree is safely placed in the tree stand. The footage begins again as the tree is all set up but still unadorned. The next scenes, all in super-fast mode, reveal the twinkling lights going onto the tree, being carefully placed, and lit. Glimpses of the thick gold garland wrapped around the tree follow. The final scenes show the fully decorated tree with countless cherished ornaments added, hanging from the branches of the now fully embellished tree. While it took hours and days to fully complete the process, the video took only two minutes to show the results. What a beautiful sight to behold, it is simply spectacular!
