The Big E – East of Eden

Here I am, just six miles east, but a world away from our previous home. Finally, I am taming the chaos. These past six weeks have been a whirlwind of activity and emotions. Making the decision to sell our home of twenty-one years was the easy part. We agreed. It was time. The selling part happened much faster than we ever expected. One open house on the Sunday before the Super Bowl brought several potential buyers. Early the next morning came an offer. How pleased we were that a lovely couple found our house to be as beautiful and unique as we did. Stately historic homes are definitely not for everyone, but it was perfect for them. Three days later the house was under contract

Every storyline has its twists and turns. This one is no exception. The new owners requested a thirty day closing. In case the lingo baffles you, here’s the bottom line: vacate the premises in less than 30 days. Yes. Talk about stress, this situation was fraught with plenty of it. Just think about packing up the contents of your home in less than four weeks. The details seemed endless. How in the world could we get everything done in such a short time? All I could think to do was jump in, get help, make a plan, stay on task. All this had to be done with me off to judge, too. Just thinking about all of it was overwhelming.

A good news part of this saga is that we had purchased an undeveloped building lot in our same township months before we offered the house for sale. During that time we did a lot of the preliminary work required to get township permission for a building permit. The bad news is that selling the house so quickly left us without a home in which to live. Presently, what we have now is an empty lot which needs to be developed. The architect has to complete the preliminary plans. Then those plans can be sent to the land engineer who will create a site plan which shows the location on the property where the house, septic, well, and the other utilities will be placed. Hopefully, the township will then grant the almighty permission to build.
