I am in my kitchen on the Friday just before Valentine’s Day. Three Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and two English Toy Spaniels are piled on top of one another on a large sofa-style doggie bed nestled near the radiator. They have recently come in from a romp through the snow. I can see the “white stuff” piled two feet high in the courtyard on the other side of the French doors. The sound of their slumber gently fills the room. I have work to do. I turn on my iPad and pull up my February playlist to enjoy some background music while I write. Suddenly the mellow voice of Frank Sinatra dominates the sweet sounds of my sleepy dogs. My ears fill with his tender rendition of “My Funny Valentine,” written by the famous team of Lorenz Hart and Richard Rogers many, many decades ago.
I get lost in the beautiful orchestration and lyrics. As the song ends, I am eager to play it again. When I do, I look over to see the dogs are rearranging themselves on their bed. “How beautiful they are,” I think. What joy each of them brings to our lives. It is their love, antics, and good company which have filled our days over these many months when we have been home more often. My eyes move over to the English Toy puppy snuggled under her mother. I can see her domed head peeking out from the pile. Look at that head! It excites me just to see it.
At that very moment, Frank Sinatra sings, “My funny valentine, sweet comic valentine, you make me smile with my heart.” I take a deep breath, decide to put aside my work, and just surrender to the music. I cannot resist. After turning up the sound, I sit on the wicker chair looking at the dogs. My heart, not my head, transports me back through what has now become more than a three decade love affair. Every word of the lyrics strikes a chord within me. The song mirrors my relationship with my dogs perfectly. They are my sweet, funny little valentines.
