As regular readers will no doubt know, I like to give a personal spin on these historical breed accounts, often starting with an anecdote about an experience or close interaction I have had with the particular breed described.

This month is especially personal, so I ask you to please indulge me if you will.

My late father had some very outdated views on dogs or, more specifically, what constituted (in his words) a ‘real’ dog.

He believed there were two types of dogs; ‘women’s dogs’ and ‘real’ dogs; in other words, a ‘man’s dog’. According to him, a ‘man’s dog’ was a big dog, one capable of aggression, protection and guarding.
