The Afghan Hound Club of America Specialty Show
By Fran Reisman
Yesterday, October 28th, was actually the second day in a week-long Afghan Hound event. Saturday was devoted to lure coursing which saw a large number of Afghans entered to enjoy this sport that supposedly recreates the hunting history of this ancient hound. Runs were offered to dogs who never chased the lure before in order to show their owners how much their Afghans love this exciting event.
The show is being held at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel in Atlanta, a short five minute drive from the airport. It’s a great hotel for a show apart from the problem with the grooming area. Here the grooming is on a separate floor from the show ring. It is not very convenient for the exhibitors. Aside from that the ring is large and the décor is exquisite. Show chairman Chuck Milne is a well-known florist and event designer in the Atlanta area. He used all his talents in making the ballroom not only beautiful, but easy for the exhibitors to work their way through the crowds into the ring.
Last night the Sweepstakes classes were judged by Anna Stromberg of South Salem, New York. Anna is originally from Sweden and has been an asset to our breed for many years. Her Best in Sweepstakes choice from an entry of 42 was the 6-9 puppy bitch, Kasban Wildest Dreams, who is owned and bred by Laura Mauldin of North Carolina.
Many exhibitors have waited to arrive until Monday and Tuesday. Sadly, the East Coast is experiencing what may be the largest storm to hit the mid-Atlantic and Northern Atlantic States, leaving us to believe that many of those who waited may not be able to make the trip. This goes for exhibitors as well.
But not only will the Easterners be affected, those who are flying to Atlanta from different parts of the United States and foreign countries may find that they won’t be able to get here either due to airflight delays….
Dog judging is starting, so I’ll get going and let you know what happens
later….
