With the advancements in veterinary care and improvements made in commercial diets, our cherished canine companions are living noticeably longer lives. Although aging is not necessarily considered a disease process, certain diseases are much more common in older dogs. Some of these diseases include arthritis, cancer, dental disease, obesity, as well as vision and hearing loss. Here is what you need to know about each of these maladies.

Cancer

Although cancer can strike a dog of any age, it is more commonly encountered in senior animals. Since cancer can affect any of a dog’s organ systems, the wide variety of the signs and symptoms include:

• the development of open sores or skin masses

• unexplained weight loss

• poor appetite and lethargy

• a cough or difficulty breathing

• diarrhea or vomiting

Any skin lesions or subcutaneous masses should be brought to the attention of your veterinarian. Just as with humans, the earlier cancer is detected and treatment initiated, the easier and more successfully it can be treated. The treatment of cancer in canines has advanced significantly over the past 30 years.
