The USA is a nation that values personal freedoms more than most. To succeed as a society, we also realize that we must do things that we may or may not agree with for the greater good. For example, I would love to drive as fast as my car can go and my abilities allow, but I accept that speed limits are required for my safety and the safety of others. I was also required to learn to drive before I was issued a license to drive.

Educational courses and programs are required in many aspects of our sport. For judges, there is a matrix of these requirements for the privilege to judge. We whine about all requirements (guilty as charged), but we fulfill them for the success of the sport we love.

AKC has required programs for many of the vocations and avocations within our sport. Judges, superintendents, club and AKC officials, and registered handlers all must meet program requirements for the good of the sport.

The list of AKC-required programs and courses have a common denominator: to protect the integrity of our sport. Some requirements also add protections for the care of the dogs and the safety of the youth in our sport. There is not a requirement, however, to help us help us create a financially stable environment for ourselves and, in turn, the sport.
