In 1993 Bill Clinton becomes the 42nd President of the United States; Czechoslovakia ceases to exist; there’s a dramatic Brinks robbery; the rom-com Groundhog Day is released and Kellie Fitzgerald handles Springer Spaniel Felicity’s Diamond Jim (James) to Best In Show at Westminster.
Also: the country is twelve years into the AIDS crisis and is devasted by a disease that is killing off relatively young people in cruel and exhausting ways.
Communities everywhere shared a burden of care, but a community like the fancy, which is fragmented and mobile, and whose members are sometimes under-resourced, called for a special level of awareness and intervention.
It took the form of a new non-profit entity, Take the Lead.
In 2020, during the pandemic, I was working on a videotaped series for the Chronicle called Good Dog People. I interviewed Thomas H. Bradley, 3d., who helped establish Take the Lead, and asked him about the organization’s beginnings, its mission, and how it works to help so many people with tact and immediacy.
