My three-week March madness marathon is over, and what a way to end it! The Kentuckiana Cluster in Louisville, Kentucky has been one of my all-time favorites for decades! The Kentuckiana Cluster did not disappoint. The competition was top-notch, and there was something for every exhibitor. From the 4-6 month puppy competition with an assisted practice session prior, to the pee wees, to the itty bitty pee wees, the cluster once again highlighted that dog shows are indeed a family sport! It always warms my heart to see a cluster so welcoming to exhibitors of all levels–most importantly, the newbies!!!! This year there were over 60 vendors, many national specialties, regional specialties, and supported entries. Over 600 free reserved grooming reservations were received. The Louisville Kennel Club and the AKC donated to the local police department to fund two police dogs, as the department had lost one of their young dogs during an armed robbery just the week prior. The presentation of the donation was done before Best In Show on Friday, and there was not a dry eye in the house! Well done, Louisville Kennel Club and AKC!! Many thanks to all of the hard-working members of the committee that makes this wonderful cluster happen.
I had the pleasure of visiting with Melinda Lyon who was able to stop by the show and visit with me for at Table Talk Live! segment. Melinda, who is normally the Show Chair for the Louisville Kennel Club, has had some health challenges that have kept her from her regular active role in the show, and she was sorely missed in that capacity. She is truly an example of determination and perseverance as she conquers each challenge that has been thrown at her. Trying to keep Melinda sitting down during her visit was indeed a challenge. She had the most beautiful smile on her face, and was overwhelmed by the support from all of her friends at the show. It was heart-warming to see the true family spirit of our sport once again!
Volunteers from the Greater Kerrville Kennel Club went above and beyond to ensure that one of their exhibitors was able to get needed vet care for one of their dogs this past weekend. The exhibitor was 1700 miles from home and one of the committee volunteers arranged for vet care, and also transported the exhibitor and her dog to and from the vet. The pooch is on the mend thanks to the thoughtful help from a club volunteer!
The Fort Worth Kennel Club will be celebrating their 102nd Anniversary this coming weekend! Once again, the committee is doing an excellent job of organizing move-in for their show. Happy Anniversary Ft. Worth KC! Have a great show!
Unfortunately, there was another case of a judge who probably should not have been standing center ring this past weekend. The judge was rude to exhibitors to the point of yelling at them and being downright mean. Several seasoned exhibitors have voiced their concern and disappointment, with the biggest concern being how this individual’s behavior would affect new exhibitors. What I am hearing is that those that showed to this judge this past weekend are certain a new exhibitor would never return. This issue seems to be occurring more and more. While we want to be inclusive to those that have been in the sport for a long time, one must realize that there are cases where we are not doing a judge any favors by putting them in a situation where they can no longer perform the duties of judging. Rudeness and lack of respect and kindness to exhibitors should not be tolerated!
I am pleased to report that Cindy Stansell is home from rehab! It won’t be long before we see her judging again, I am sure! Keep up the good work, Cindy!
It is with great sadness that I report the passing of Jackie Gottlieb. She was just shy of her 100th birthday. Our sincere sympathy goes out to her daughter, Cindy Vogels, and the rest of Jackie’s family. She will be sorely missed.
Poodle fancier Lori Winans was tragically killed in a car accident this past weekend. Our thoughts are with Lori’s friends and family at this difficult time. Lori will be missed by the all who knew her.
Our thoughts are with Linda Souza and her daughter Jamie Souza Bartlett. Linda’s breast cancer that was in remission has metastasized. Please keep Linda and her family in your thoughts at this difficult time.
Linda Mattson left the Cabrillo Kennel Club Sunday via ambulance and was later released. As it turns out, she was suffering from severe dehydration. Take care of yourself, girl! Don’t forget to drink that water!
Celebrating birthdays this week are: Fan Yu, Pilar Kuhn, Mercedes Vila, Kay Belter, Dale Sullens, Kate Murray, Tad Brooks, Kelly Shupp and Allison Alexander. May each and every one of you have the best birthday ever!
My thought for this week is: The truth is still the truth, even if no one believes it. A lie is still a lie, even if everyone believes it.
