Success in this sport demands focus and perseverance, two things that fall well outside the definition of fun. Cutting corners, sloppy ethics, and countless lazy off-ramps are perennial temptations. That’s why long-term success is an endangered species. Geri Kelly falls into the endangered species category. Among her other accomplishments, she recently finished her 379th champion. Recounting her decades in this game, she says, “I’ve had a good run, seven BIS winners, dogs in fifteen countries that did very well.”

That’s impressive but even overachievers must start somewhere. In this case, it was Bulldogs. “My family had long history showing dogs. My grandmother helped to establish the Boston Terrier in the US. I have a picture of her in 1898 holding a basket of Bostons. It was just a hobby for her. Then my aunts had them, too. When my father came home from the service, he bought a Bulldog.” He started a trend. “My sister, Elizabeth Davey, is a very well-known Bulldogger.” Betty received her first Bulldog as a gift in 1945 and went on to establish her Saluit bloodline. She became an equally successful artist. Her accomplishments include designing the iconic Mack Truck Bulldog.
