For a time, Marc and I lived close to Dartmoor, a wild upland expanse of open moorland and deep river valleys. A truly gorgeous, unspoiled part of Southwest England.
Through mutual friends we got to know a chap who lived in splendid isolation on the edge of the moor, and one day, he invited us over to his ultra-modern ‘eco’ home for advice on what types of livestock he could keep to manage his vast acreage.
He was a writer, too, so having a children’s book (Elton the Different Kookaburra) I desperately wished to see published, I secretly hoped to make some valuable connections from our meeting.
We headed over, and he gave us a tour of his splendidly situated house, which had breathtakingly beautiful, panoramic views from every window–and I subsequently learned that he had created an extremely successful cartoon series that had proven particularly popular in the US and quite obviously generated a whole lot of money!
As we were nosing around, we were enthusiastically joined on our tour by a rather scruffy-looking little dog who instantly took a liking to me. She was a Cairn Terrier and absolutely adorable.
In no time at all she was being carried under my arm and having her chin tickled and, when I was eventually forced to put her on the ground, she continually brought me an assortment of fluffy and squeaky toys to wrestle with and throw.
I was completely captivated by her and, being quite the scene-stealer, we ended up talking far more about her than any potentially beneficial publishing contacts!
Oh, well.
