Try this hypothetical: You see a company that holds a near 100% market share on the product it offers. It has favorable tax status, it’s coming up on 150 years in business, and it has a product that has stood the test of time. Barriers to entry for potential competitors are very high, as is customer loyalty. You would consider investing, wouldn’t you?
That company is the AKC. So, hold that thought. Would you invest in the AKC?
For those who think your answer is “no”, here’s the reality: Every time you register a litter, every time you enter a show, every year when we all trek to Orlando en masse — you are investing in the AKC. That’s a fact. So, fellow investors, how do you feel about your returns?
Bashing the AKC is easy. The truth is this: The AKC is what we’ve got. In the same way you are stuck with your parent club, for better or worse, you are stuck with the AKC. A replacement isn’t coming along. Articles (very well-written articles I might add) about the demise of the AKC might be good mental chewing gum, but it isn’t going to happen. And if it does happen, make no mistake, we will be in a far worse place than we are now. The AKC doesn’t need more criticism. It needs to get its act together. The AKC is not a social club. It’s not a fraternity. And the historic practice of just promoting from within has crippled it. Linebreeding may work with our dogs, but when it comes to the AKC leadership, we’re in need of some serious outcrosses.
