Progressive Entries Impress Again

By Amy Fernandez

A rainy Westminster week kicked off Friday with the 94th Progressive Toy Dog Show held once again at the quaint and quirky PennTop Ballroom at the Hotel Pennsylvania.

As usual, there was no shortage of heavyweight specials in attendance. As usual, Yorkshire Terriers lead the pack thanks to the back-to-back weekend specialties that are held down the street. This year they accounted for 62 of 398 total entries.

Cavaliers drew the second largest entry with 42 contenders.  BOB from a class of 16 specials went to GCh. KBPride Rattlebridge Fergus, who currently hovers mid-pack in the breed’s top ten.

BOB among an entry of 30 Havanese went to GCh. Oeste’s In the Name of Love, handled by Taffe McFadden, one of his breeder/owners along with Mary King, Rafe Schindler, and Julie Vogel.

Chihuahuas also accounted for a nice chunk of entries with the top ranked breed winner GCh. Bello Embustero of Composant taking BOV over 27 Smooths and Ch. Team Esteban Love Story, handled by Michael Scott, defeating 31 Long Coats.

Twenty-one Pugs qualified as a decent entry although it’s certainly short of the breed’s typical turnout, with BOB going to Carolyn Koch’s top ranked, multiple BIS winner GCHG. Hill Country’s Puttin on the Ritz

Shih Tzu also staked a nice claim on the show with 27 entries. Judge Luc Boileau’s choice for BOB going to Ch. Winterholme Any Way U Want It, who finished last year as a Top Ten Toy. This dog is owned by Wendy Anderson and Richard Paquette.

Pom judging was interesting with BOB over an entry of 16 going to a foreign dog from Thailand, Ch. Tokie Too Good To Be True.

Ultimately, this didn’t turn out to be a numbers game. Aside from the Havanese, which went on to a triumphant Group Second, the final lineup accounted for some of the smallest breed entries.

Group Fourth, from an entry of four Affens, went to: GCHS. Tamarin Tailback, who has racked up quite an impressive record in both all breed and group rankings over the past couple years. Likewise, Smash Jp Louboutin faced off against three Toy Poodles on his way to a Group Third win.

At least in this case it’s safe to say that history repeats itself. Pekingese have dominated Progressive from the start. (David Fitzpatrick also seems to have a fair track record at this event.) Although quite a youngster, his CH. Pequest Feel The Burn defeated 14 in Breed to carry off the blue rosette. This is David’s 17th victory at Progressive; a record unlikely to be broken by anyone other than him.
