I’ve had numerous flirtations with scores of pedigree dog breeds over the years but one admiration has endured and that is my love for the French Bulldog.
When I was about fourteen, long before “Frenchie Fever” gripped the world, I well remember receiving a copy of the Dog World Annual (UK) as a Christmas present and being absolutely captivated by an advertisement within.
It featured (back in the mid-1980s) one of the renowned Bomlitz French Bulldogs (owned by doyenne of the breed, Vivien Watkins) in one of the typically classy black and white advertisements that would subsequently become the hallmark of this truly exceptional kennel.
I became fascinated by the breed and pestered my mom to have one.
She firmly put her foot down, completely destroying my early dreams of Frenchie ownership; “there is no way we are having a dog that looks like it’s run into a brick wall.”
(She now owns and adores Boston Terriers!)
However, back to those understated, classy, black and white Bomlitz ads. At the time they seemed so fitting for the very distinguished “Bouledogue Francais” but does the breed’s impeccable ‘French credentials’ actually stand up to scrutiny?
