Your friend attended the classes, studied the manuals until he memorized them, studied some more, and asked questions of those with more experience. He asked questions of those who recently advanced through the test taking process. Finally, he nervously took the test and passed with flying colors. Next, he obtained permit status, practiced, and eventually received his license. He met the criteria, jumped through every hoop, checked every box. No longer in permit status, he asked if you’d like to drive with him through New York City at rush hour in his uncle’s Ferrari. You hesitate. Who wouldn’t? But you go with him anyway.
While he did not meet expectations, he did meet a lamppost– head-on. As a result of his lack of experience in such matters, you need surgery. You have a choice between a brother and sister surgeon. The brother graduated from Harvard Medical School, passed the boards on the first try, and excelled in his residency. He’s brilliant! He’d done three of the type of surgeries you need and all went well. The older sister is also a surgeon and graduated from Johns Hopkins, yet another top tier medical school. Instead of three successful surgeries of the type you need, she’s done 97. She’s also brilliant! Which surgeon is cutting you open?
It’s likely that the new driver who smashed his uncle’s Ferrari will be a better driver in 10 years. With some experience and honing of his skills, that is. He may even go on to win the Monaco Grand Prix. Who knows? And with 10 years of hospital experience, the new surgeon may eventually become among the most respected in his field. Education and training are essential and wonderful. Experience is also an extremely key factor. There is no substitute for gaining experience, however, than repetition and on-the-job training
