Westminster is just around the corner and as much as we look forward to our annual OD of glitz and glamour, we are also prepped for rude shocks. Yes, this is the notorious venue of upsets where big winners take a nosedive and fifteen minutes of proverbial fame is bestowed on dark horse contenders. Regardless of who wins or loses, the post-show debates invariably center on the judging. Every decision is dissected and debated for months, actually for years in some cases. Thanks to live streaming, the entire sport can now participate in those merciless critiques.
The lack of judging talent and expertise has been a contentious issue for this sport since day one. Likewise, inspired plans to fix it are historically a dime a dozen. Countless experiments have been investigated, attempted and shelved. AKC spends a fortune on it. Despite all that the quality needle never seems to move in the right direction.
Here’s an old idea that might deserve some reconsideration. There has always been a strong belief in the superiority of AKC judges that herald from a background in horses and livestock. They really knew their stuff. Unfortunately, there’s not many of them these days.
