Compiled By Joan Harrigan

After the AKC National Championship in Orlando, Florida on December 17th and 18th, the Canine Chronicle asked the Group and Best in Show judges for their comments. This show is well-known for its recognition of breeders and owner-handlers through its Bred-by-Exhibitor competition and National Owner-Handled Series finals, as well as its Junior Showmanship finals. Their Best in Show or Finals judges were also asked for their comments.

The Sporting Group

Jamie Hubbard of Bloomington, Indiana judged the Sporting Group. He wrote: “It’s always an honor to judge at an event like this where the quality of dogs is very high. I can honestly say that my group was spearheaded by four superior animals who really pushed my thought process to get them in order of first through fourth. In addition, the remaining four dogs that made up my ‘Final Eight’ were well-deserving of being recognized in the final lineup.”

Group One:

GCHG Collina D’Oro Solo Un Bacio (Spinone Italiano)

Bred by: Stacey Anderson Belt and Lorne Belt

Owned by: Claire Wisch Abraham and Stacey Anderson Belt

“This Spinone looked amazing tonight and was flawless. Everything from her conformation to her condition was perfect and it’s impossible to keep my thoughts about her brief. Standing, she shows her wonderful outline with her topline and croup falling and rising in the right spots (which doesn’t change moving). Her characteristic head with diverging planes, big nose, and large eyes gives you the specific soft and human-like expression so important to the breed. Her coat was in perfect condition—harsh to the touch, of correct length, and naturally presented. She finally put all her parts together when in motion, displaying an effortless, unexaggerated, and easy trot. As a breeder, the icing on the cake is to find a bitch in this breed with this much quality. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for her in the whelping box.”
