Facebook has become the best friend and the biggest enemy of our social media lives in Dogdom. What can be a positive interaction can just as easily become a destruction derby. Here are viewpoints from three judges on this very challenging area of our daily interactions. Maybe these responses will encourage the way you use Facebook to do good, or to temper your words before they do harm? ~ Elaine Lessig, Moderator

Faye Strauss - AKC Judge

1. As a judge, how do you use your Facebook page in a positive way?

As chairperson of the Doberman Pinscher Club of America Judges Education committee we use the internet and Facebook to educate the fancy and judges about our breed. Our committee produced a 7-minute video that is available on the DPCA website and on YouTube. The “How to Judge the Doberman” video has over 287,000 views. It is the perfect refresher for any judge who is judging our breed, or for anyone who wants to understand our standard.

Our latest endeavor is posting educational segments on Facebook. Each month we take a section of our standard and comment on it with drawings and verbiage. We have lots of comments and shares. Committee member Vicki Cushman posts at the beginning of each month. Please check it out and share it with your friends.

2. As a judge, what do you do to avoid unwelcome situations?

I don’t expect any unwelcome situations, so I don’t plan for them. I take judging seriously, studying the Illustrated standard, reading the standards, and articles by breed experts, as well as talking to my mentors. I try to do a good job every time I judge and if a competitor comes to me about my judging, I simply explain what I felt was right about my choices.

As many of you know my partner does utilize Facebook on a regular basis.

Two suggestions to maximize the advantages of your canine Facebook page:
