What positive changes have you seen in the judging community in the past two years?

As a newer judge I am encouraged by the changes in the learning process. The Canine College and the AKC breed/procedure webinars have been very helpful. When there were no shows, and kennel visits were impossible, online learning was a wonderful option.

Judges also became more aware of disease transmission. Sanitizing our hands and having exhibitors show mouths are habits we should keep up. This is good for humans and the dogs!

What concerning changes have you observed in the judging community in the past two years?

Travel has become more difficult and more expensive. Clubs have budgets that they must adhere to and are continuing to hire the same local judges. Panels are not as varied as they could be. This practice also makes it more difficult for Permit judges to find assignments and move forward in the process.

You cannot discuss concerns in the community without mentioning Social Media. It is discussed constantly and my thought is just be neutral and kind. As a judge, we can’t show favoritism in anyway.
