Judges are both highly visible and opaque. Tireless, courteous and vigilant, they toil away week after week in all sorts of weather and venues, logging frequent flier miles, creating their own versions of Route 66, and making the acquaintance of every hotel and motel chain in America. They travel with rain gear, and own many pairs of practical shoes.
Group judges get to put on a little fancy dress but otherwise, it’s the same job: know your standards and look for the best dog on the day.
The Westminster Kennel Club has a deep bench, but this year invited some first-time judges as well as veterans. In advance of this year’s show, we spoke to four judges about their careers, their approaches to assessing dogs, and their excitement about Westminster. All were–you should forgive the expression–bred for this moment.
