A long-time breeder, who was a chain smoker, reported the untimely death of his young, multi-champion Cavalier. A necropsy report of his dog revealed lung cancer with metastasis to vital organs. In an attempt to curtail his smoking addiction, he switched from nicotine cigarettes to vaping. He reports near constant vaping during working hours which primarily includes the indoor grooming and training of his Cavalier puppies and young dogs. He reports the development of a chronic cough occurring in his best structured Cavalier whom he plans to aggressively campaign in the conformation show circuit.

Vaping is increasingly popular as a substitute for cigarette smokers. The well-known toxic effects of nicotine inhalation include lung cancer, stroke, heart attacks and peripheral vascular disease. Recent studies document the adverse effects of second-hand nicotine smoke exposure to persons who never smoked which include lung cancer and respiratory conditions. Most people do not realize that vaping poses severe irreversible lung damage which occurs in a shorter time frame than tradition cigarette smoking.

There are two types of vaping risks to dogs–namely toxicity due to (a) passive aerosol inhalation and (b) direct toxic ingestion of vape liquids.
