The renowned English writer, Desmond Morris, was the first to describe the Greyhound as the “dog of superlatives”.
He wrote; “It has the longest history of any breed, having been depicted in ancient art more than 6,000 years ago. It is the most aristocratic of all dogs, having been owned by more royalty and nobility than any other breed. It is the fastest of dogs, reaching over 40mph. It is the most prolific of dogs, one male having sired over 3,000 pups. It is also one of the most expensive breeds in the world; champion racing Greyhounds having changed hands for as much as $72,000.”
Desmond goes on to add yet another extraordinary record held by this amazing breed–it has been given more names than any other dog. A survey of English literature revealed more than fifty different names including Graihond, Grewdog, Grizhund, Graydog and Grewin.
The great man is of course, quite correct in all his record-breaking assertions, but one caught my eye more than all the others–its history. Amongst all the breeds of dog in the world, none can more clearly establish its antiquity than the Greyhound.
It is also mentioned in the Bible, in the Book of Solomon, Chapter XXX, Verses 29-31
“There be three things that go well, yea four that are comely in going, a lion which is strongest among beasts and turneth not from any:
A Greyhound, a he goat also, and a king against whom there is no rising up.”
