For decades, the AKC’s 200-mile rule served a practical purpose. It was designed to protect clubs, preserve entries, and prevent competing shows from being scheduled too close together. At the time, it made sense.

But today’s dog show world looks very different, and the 200-mile rule has not kept pace.

If the sport wants to remain healthy and exhibitor-friendly, it is time to seriously consider increasing that distance to 300 or even 400 miles in many regions of the country.

The biggest issue is simple: 200 miles is no longer a meaningful separation for most exhibitors. Professional handlers and serious competitors routinely travel far beyond that for shows. In many parts of the country, a four-or five-hour drive has become normal. Weekend circuits covering hundreds of miles are common.
