My good friend from out west called me the other day, and the discussion turned to the current state of affairs with dog shows and the AKC. My friend’s a smart guy, and a really successful businessman. During our discussion, he started referring to the clubs as franchises. I quickly corrected him, and said the clubs are independent entities operating within AKC’s rules and regulations. He said, “Sure.” The response dripped with sarcasm.

So, I started thinking, “Is the AKC a franchise system, or something similar?”

The American Kennel Club likes to call itself a “club of clubs.” It’s a tidy phrase that sounds grassroots and democratic—local people, local clubs, all working together under one proud banner. But lately, the AKC behaves less like a federation and more like a franchisor.
