For the first time in the history of The Canine Chronicle, our May issue features the Westminster Kennel Club dog show. This isn’t a surprise to anyone since 1887 was the last time Westminster held a dog show in May, until now.

Winning Best In Show at Westminster is one of the great accomplishments in sports–not just the sport of purebred dogs, but all sporting events. It’s history is rich with stories of owners and handlers who tried year-in and year-out to win this show yet never had the good fortune to win it all. I am talking about household names who had some of the greatest dogs ever; yet they never won BIS at Westminster.

There are so many familiar names–dogs and handlers–who never finished Tuesday night hearing something to the effect of, “And Best In Show goes to…” then having the judge point their way. The great German Shepherd Mystique never won the coveted WKC rosette. Neither did Pat Craige (now Trotter) even though she won more hound groups at the Garden than anyone during the time I?have been in dogs. Corky Vroom won nearly every showdog-related award on the planet, but not Westminster. The great Portuguese Water Dog Matisse never prevailed at Westminster. Neither did the history-making Old English Sheepdog, Swagger; but he came close by winning Reserve Best In Show from the classes.
