February 16, 2022 was a sad day in the history of the sport of purebred dogs. Former chairman of the AKC Board of Directors, Ron Menaker, passed away. I am not sure any of us understand how much he will be missed by everyone who participates in this pastime we all love so much.
Ron’s absence from the sport before his death gave us a glimpse of how things would be without him at the helm of the board he chaired for so many years. The business experience and financial management expertise he brought to the American Kennel Club when he joined the board as Vice Chairman in 2001 served the organization well, and for nearly two decades–off and on–he helped steer AKC through some very difficult times.
I can’t tell you how many times over the past couple of years that bright, thoughtful, and successful members of our sport would ask if I knew how Ron was doing; then they would tell me how much they missed seeing him, and they wished he was still on the Board.
It’s hard to hold a public position such as chairman of an organization like AKC and maintain a moderation of popularity and respect amongst its constituents. Ron Menaker did just that, and more. He was recognized as a popular judge and respected leader by many in the sport. He was an innovator that helped AKC become more than just a registry. He recognized the brand power of AKC and helped the staff maximize its potential.
